Strategic Communications

Here is a summary of this week’s Enterprise Technology & Services Tech Briefing:

  • Canvas made an update to course discussions in August. Check the settings in your fall courses to ensure they match your preferences.
  • Reminder: AirMedia allows you to connect to projectors in most classrooms without a cable.
  • Cybersecurity Awareness Month is coming and features many sessions, including an in-person session on October 23 at UNH.
  • Reminder: Mahara is going away in December. ET&S offers two new options in its place.
  • Check out our tip of the week on Quarantined Email and browse the latest ET&S training sessions.

Update to Settings in Canvas Discussions
To Know: Canvas recently updated Discussions in August 2024 to include an option to disallow threaded replies. When enabled, students will not be able to reply to other students’ posts within a discussion.

This update may have affected some existing discussions due to differences in managing new and legacy discussions. As a result, Canvas may have automatically enabled the “Disallow Threaded Replies” setting to preexisting discussions.

To Do: At this time, we recommend checking the discussion settings in your active courses and master course shells to verify that the “Disallow Threaded Replies” option is not enabled for discussions where students need to reply to each other’s posts. See the Canvas Threaded Discussions KB article for more information.

Wireless Projection Available in Most Classrooms

To Know: AirMedia is a wireless projection solution available in most USNH classrooms that allows anyone in the room to connect your device to a projector without cables.

Cybersecurity Month
To Know:
October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and we’re excited to announce a series of events and webinars designed to educate and engage our community on the importance of cybersecurity! This year, we have some exciting sessions and special events planned.

Every Wednesday throughout October, join us for informative webinars where experts will discuss a range of cyber topics.

We are also thrilled to be hosting an in-person event on October 23rd from 9 am to 1 pm at the MUB on UNH’s campus. This event will feature special guest speakers from the state of New Hampshire and federal agencies. This is a fantastic opportunity to connect and learn.

To Do: Be on the lookout for webinar registration links and an RSVP to secure your spot for October 23.

Reminder: Plymouth E-Portfolio Updates

To Know: After carefully evaluating usage, effectiveness, cost, and duplicative services available, Enterprise Technology & Services is sunseting Mahara in December 2024. In its place, ET&S offers two new e-portfolios options: Sites@USNH and Domain of One’s Own. These customizable web-based options allow students, faculty, and staff to set up WordPress or other web-based portfolio creations.  As a reminder, starting in Fall 2023, all requests for new PlymouthCreate sites are directed to Sites@USNH or https://usnh.domains/. Please note that PlymouthCreate will continue to be fully supported for existing sites.

Tip of the Week: How to View Quarantined Email
To Know:
As part of Microsoft 365 advanced threat protection, Quarantine holds potential email spam messages slated for delivery in your inbox. You may occasionally receive a list of potential spam messages from Microsoft to review. You can then decide to block the sender or release the message to your inbox. These messages will be quarantined for 30 days.

To Do: To learn more, read our article on Advanced Threat Protection: Viewing Quarantined Email at https://td.usnh.edu/TDClient/60/Portal/KB/.
