Hosting

USNH websites and web applications must have a robust hosting environment in order to be safe and reliable resources for the USNH community.

Web hosting guidelines

Enterprise Technology & Services strongly encourages all USNH-related websites to either be hosted on USNH servers or to use the mySites Personal Website Service.

  • USNH-branded sites are strongly encouraged to be part of the USNH Drupal environment.
  • Official USNH websites should not be hosted on third-party services.
  • Non-Drupal sites may be hosted at USNH if they follow the standard for standalone sites.
  • Sponsored research sites may be hosted through the Research Computing Center.
  • Anyone choosing to set up a server at USNH must comply with all USNH server best practices as defined by USNH ET&S Software Development. This includes having a clearly designated individual who is responsible for the server infrastructure and hosting environment.

Lab and research website hosting

Research and laboratory websites serve as tools for publishing, sharing and collecting research information related to work being done at USNH. The audience for these sites is the USNH community, affiliated researchers and institutions, scientific communities and the general public.

Individual research or laboratories

If a website represents an individual's research or laboratory, then that website should be hosted at sites.usnh.edu or usnh.domains. Websites can have multiple USNH site editors for easier upkeep. Ongoing training is available for WordPress, and self service support for Domain of One's Own is available through the Domain of One’s Own Community Documentation. Researchers that require websites representing multiple institute research groups or consortiums can request a multi-institute site from the Research Computing Center.

University System research center or laboratory

If the website represents the work of a recognized research center or laboratory that will continue to exist regardless of the presence of any individual, then that website should be part of the appropriate entity’s website (e.g. college) to which it belongs. For more information or for interdisciplinary centers, please contact ET&S Software Development.

Special data representation needs

Special data handling, such as data management, gathering, or visualization can be supported by the Research Computing Center (RCC). To request a research website with special data representation needs, please contact RCC.

Security

Website owners, managers of any websites, and staff administering servers are responsible for responding to any reports of security issues or vulnerabilities or discovery of security breaches on their sites. Any security concerns should be reported promptly by contacting the USNH IT Service Desk.

Support

For questions regarding hosting, please refer to the Service Catalog for web hosting.

Training

Anyone working on a USNH website is welcome to attend the open walk-in training and help sessions that ET&S offers. For a schedule of the training sessions and walk-in times, see the Teaching & Learning Technologies training calendar.

Responsibility for digital content

College and school websites are maintained by members of the university community acting as official representatives of USNH. Site owners and editors are responsible for complying with all relevant laws, USNH policies and this standard.

Violations

USNH ET&S Software Development reserves the right to remove a website or application from a USNH server if it is considered to have violated this standard or any other USNH policies or standards or if it is determined to pose a clear and present danger to the university system, its information, or its information technology resources.

Servers that are not being managed in accordance with ET&S guidelines and security standards may be blocked from accessing the USNH network.

If inappropriate or inaccurate server usage is reported, ET&S will contact the site owner to discuss the issue. Unacceptable responses may cause USNH website, web tool, or server access to be suspended. If the site or content owner cannot be contacted or is no longer at USNH, that site will be administered ET&S and may be removed.

Reports regarding inappropriate content or server usage may be sent to ET&S.
