Subject: Tech Briefing: To Know and Do - Tuesday, December 12, 2023

Today’s Enterprise Technology & Services (ET&S) Tech Briefing contains new information, a reminder, and a training opportunity.

Change in Microsoft Security Settings on Wednesday, December 20 (New)

To Know: On Wednesday, December 20, ET&S will enable a 24-hour “idle session timeout” for all web-based M365 Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams) in advance of Microsoft’s upcoming requirement of having session timeouts enabled. ET&S has enabled this setting for the maximum length of 24 hours. After 24 hours of inactivity (no interaction with any M365 apps in your browser window), a prompt will display asking you to confirm your session and that you want to remain signed in. If you do not confirm, you will automatically be signed out.

To Do: If you are automatically signed out, you must log in again with your fully qualified username (jbd2519@usnh.edu) and password. Sometimes, you may be prompted to authenticate via Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

Sleep Settings for Intune-Managed Windows Computers (New)
To Know: ET&S (Enterprise Technology & Services) received feedback regarding concerns over recent changes to the power settings for Intune-managed Windows PCs, which put devices to sleep after one or two hours.

To address these concerns, ET&S is changing these settings to the following:

  • If devices are on battery power only, they will enter sleep mode after two hours.
  • Plugged in devices will never enter sleep mode.
  • The screen will continue to turn off after 2 hours for devices that are plugged in to prevent screen burnout. This will not impact processing.

ET&S has enabled these new settings, and they may take up to eight hours to deploy to each device. For these sleep-specific timings, ET&S will collaborate with campus stakeholders to determine the best settings for different use cases across our campus community and implement them appropriately. ET&S will continue to improve processes for sharing information and collecting feedback on changes before rolling them out going forward.

To Do: ET&S recommends restarting your device for these changes to take effect. If you have questions or concerns about this change, or if you would like assistance with your power settings on your Intune-Managed Windows Computer, please contact the Help Desk.
