Greetings-
Enterprise Technology & Services is reaching out to help you with an upcoming security-related change that Microsoft is making to its M365 email and other services.  Microsoft will discontinue support for “basic authentication” starting on October 1, 2022. Basic authentication puts your password and account at much higher risk than the more modern authentication solutions.  For this reason, Microsoft is going to discontinue its use.

We identified that you still use basic authentication for your university email account. We will work with you to get your devices switched over so that you are not locked out of your email and other services in October.

Upgrade your iPhone/iPad

The most common reason you are still using basic authentication is that you are using an iOS device (iPhone, iPad) to access your email and that you set up your email on this device in the past. Apple just released an update to iOS on July 20 that will automatically change your Microsoft account from basic authentication to a more secure configuration. The only action you need to take is to update your devices.

To Do:

  • Update all your iPhone(s) or iPad(s) to the latest iOS release. Please upgrade every device, even if you only use it to check your mail occasionally. Click here for instructions.

What if I’m not an iPhone/iPad user?

The other reason you still use basic authentication is an out-of-date mail application. Older versions of Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, etc may only support basic authentication. You should upgrade these applications to ensure you are using the current version.

You may also need to remove your mail account and re-add it to the application. You also could use the most recent release of Microsoft’s Outlook application to access your email and calendars, as that fully supports modern authentication solutions.

ET&S will continue to monitor the users who are showing as using basic authentication over the next few weeks.  If we still see that you are showing as using basic authentication by later in August, we will reach out again with a more personalized set of instructions on how to contact us and get additional assistance.
