ET&S Strategic Communications

Enterprise Technology & Services is providing this update on the Box-to-Microsoft 365 (M365) migration exploration we announced last spring.

Between April 2021 and today, Enterprise Technology & Services (ET&S) conducted a feasibility study on the migration process. ET&S migrated all students and other volunteer accounts from Box to Microsoft 365 (M365). We also hosted multiple town halls on the Box-to-M365 migration. In August 2021, ET&S initiated a survey to get a deeper understanding of faculty and researcher cloud storage needs. We would like to thank everyone who provided input into this process, as it was critical to helping inform our decision.

Based on the results of all the efforts listed above including the thoughtful and thorough feedback given through the survey, UNH will move from Box to M365 for its primary cloud-based storage over the next year, concluding in March 2023. This will provide UNH with a secure, integrated environment that is appropriate for internal and external collaborations and approved for the storage of protected data. It was clear from the feedback we received how critical user support is to make this transition successful. ET&S will offer robust group support and training along with the use of automated tools to help users through this transition.

Here is our project timeline:

Where We’ve Been

  • Spring 2021 – Conducted ET&S Box Exploration Feasibility Pilot; hosted town halls to seek input from the university community
  • Summer 2021 – Copied UNH students’ data from Box to OneDrive; worked with UNH departments who also piloted this process
  • Fall 2021 – Published and distributed Box survey to all UNH faculty; received and analyzed the results of this survey. A summary of the results can be found on the Box Migration website linked below.

Where We’re Going

  • January 2022 – Begin targeted outreach to groups and users to establish a migration schedule
  • Monthly throughout 2022 – Provide campus-wide updates on migration
  • March 2023 – Migration concludes
